Candidate Bio
My name is Jen Owens, I am the First Woman of Color to run for City of Maplewood Mayor. I have lived in Minnesota for over 30 years and consider Maplewood my home. I attended the Univ of MN- Twin Cities and currently pursuing dual degrees to further and continue my education. Oprah asked Prince Harry, what is the greatest issues facing humanity today? He said climate and mental health. I am very happy that the City of Maplewood has always adopted a climate adaption plan. We need implementation at every level of society to drive the change we all need.

What would be your top three priorities if elected?
Climate Adaption; Children Rights, Job Creation

How would you characterize the business climate in Maplewood and what is the role of businesses supporting quality of life issues in the community?
According to the FBI, white extremists and domestic terrorism is the greatest threat facing Americans today. I believe in civil discourse, but when there is an attack on government, leaders, churches then it leaves no place for Americans to aspire to or look up to. This damages the country and its moral. Its time to start respecting leaders, institutions, government to do their jobs are there is no standard to be followed in the United States.

What role do you think the city should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to, and retain existing
businesses in, Maplewood? Every business in Maplewood should have a climate plan, should be federal reporter and should listen to the leaders in their government and institutions. If you give leaders/institutions hard time, they can not freely do their jobs.

What policies, if any, would you support to help employers address the labor shortage?
If seated as Mayor, Maplewood will lead on climate adaption, policies in all levels of society, included but not limited to: unlimited PTO; health insurance, vacation time, minimum wage, investment into diverse communities, etc.

Do you support any specific employment-related proposals in Maplewood (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in Maplewood and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?

If seated, As Mayor, I will create aggressive policies that change what American society work force needs. I will also be a poster City and lead the rest of the state and world. To keep back to normal. I will bring in the top in their fields to address various issues impacting quality of life.

Public safety and rising crime rates are of serious concern to the business community and residents. What strategies or policies would you propose to address public safety issues facing your community?

Encourage communities to go to school, develop their family and get a dedicated hobby to keep them busy and off the streets.

What strategies or policies would you propose to address housing issues facing your community?
More developers/land lords/property managers of color are needed to respond to the needs of the people.

What strategies or policies would you propose to address transportation issues facing your community? Have your strategies or views changed on transportation since we’ve seen shifts in road use, public transportation use, work from home models, etc. due to the pandemic?

What are your priorities for the City’s budget?
Increase the City budget, Attract more diversity and talent, resource the hurting communities, decrease crime, decrease cyber attacks, prevent/report, restaurants and climate adaption.

What will you do to expand Maplewood’s tax base?
The Tax Base just need to be settled at local/state levels, this will require impacted communities to heal and stabilize from the trauma they have experienced by individuals (white supremacists/domestic terrorists) promoting the debt crisis and surveillance.

How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
We will look at developing different school models for children, as well as equip parents to stay home to care for their kids and get them involved in activities outside of school

Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
I believe we need diverse perspectives in City administration.

What is the role of the Mayor in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses in Maplewood?
IF seated, my goal will be to increase minority and women owned businesses, leaders and professionals to develop on ways that have impacted out communities.

What further policies can Maplewood adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
Every company should have a climate adaption plan, every company should be changing is business to deal with the devastation COVID-19 has caused. They should report on local/state/federal levels if they see people who promote the climate crisis onto innocent communities.

Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?

Please join my campaign: www.jenowens4staterep.com. I participate in ranked choice voting and looking to make a real difference in communities. Everyone deserves a seat at the table to discuss how issues have impacted them, and communities. This also includes how to develop policy that will create aggressive change.
