Candidate Bio
Samakab Hussein is a dedicated public servant with a strong background in community activism, particularly in advocating for underrepresented populations. With years of experience working in various non-profit and government roles, Hussein has successfully led initiatives to improve educational opportunities, healthcare access, and economic development in his community. His commitment to social justice and equity, combined with a deep understanding of the challenges faced by his district, positions him as a qualified and passionate candidate for State Representative.
What would be your top three priorities if elected? How might these priorities be affected by the state's projected economic outlook?
If elected, my top three priorities would be (1) enhancing public education, ensuring every child has access to quality education, (2) improving healthcare access, particularly for marginalized communities, and (3) addressing affordable housing shortages. The state’s projected economic outlook might challenge funding these initiatives, but I will prioritize reallocating existing resources and seeking innovative funding mechanisms to support these critical areas.
How would you characterize the business climate in the East Metro? Please elaborate on your answer. The business climate in the East Metro is robust but faces challenges due to economic disparities and workforce shortages. While there are thriving sectors, small businesses often struggle with rising operational costs and labor shortages. Continued investment in workforce development and infrastructure is essential to sustaining and growing the region’s economy.
Please characterize your perspective on the ideal collaboration between government and the business community when it comes to tackling challenges whether they be education, housing, or workforce development? Do you feel the outcomes of the 2023-2024 legislative session positively or negatively impacted that collaboration and our state's business climate?
The ideal collaboration between government and business involves a partnership where both entities work towards common goals such as improving education, housing, and workforce development. The outcomes of the 2023-2024 legislative session have been a mix of positive and negative impacts on this collaboration, with some policies fostering growth while others have imposed burdens on businesses. Moving forward, it is crucial to balance regulation with support to ensure a thriving business climate.
What policies, if any, would you support to help employers address our state’s critical labor shortage?
To address the state’s critical labor shortage, I would support policies that invest in workforce training and education, particularly in high-demand fields. Additionally, creating incentives for businesses to offer competitive wages and benefits, along with attracting workers from other states, will be key strategies to mitigate the shortage.
The 2023-2024 Legislature passed many new mandates on employers, such as Paid Family Medical Leave, Earned Safe and Sick Time, and Worker Misclassification penalties. Do you support the PFML program in its current form or do you believe there needs to be further refinement before the program comes into effect in January 2026? If elected, what steps would you take to understand the impact of a proposal on the many types of businesses in the East Metro and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
I support the PFML program but believe it may require further refinement to address concerns raised by small businesses. If elected, I will engage directly with business owners and stakeholders in the East Metro to understand the program's impact and work towards practical solutions that accommodate various business needs while maintaining the program's integrity.
What are your strategies to address public safety challenges in your district and the state?
To address public safety challenges, I would focus on community-based policing, enhancing mental health services, and investing in youth programs to prevent crime. Collaboration with local law enforcement and community leaders will be essential to creating a safer environment for all residents.
How would you work to improve transportation options in the district/state, including improved safety for transit riders, pedestrian/bike, and drivers alike?
Improving transportation options in the district involves investing in public transit infrastructure, enhancing pedestrian and bike safety, and implementing measures to ensure the safety of all road users. I would advocate for state and federal funding to support these initiatives.
What ideas do you have to address housing shortages and affordability?
To address housing shortages and affordability, I propose increasing funding for affordable housing projects, incentivizing the construction of mixed-income developments, and working with local governments to streamline the approval process for new housing projects.
In light of projected budget deficit/"structural imbalance," what are your priorities for the State's budget?
In light of the projected budget deficit, my priorities would be to protect funding for essential services such as education, healthcare, and housing while seeking efficiencies in government spending. I would also explore new revenue sources, such as closing tax loopholes, to ensure a balanced and equitable budget.
