Candidate Bio
I am a long-time resident of Little Canada, with deep family roots in the City as well. I am a freelance writer and a home healthcare worker, and prior to that I had a career in advertising. I am a single mother to an 18 year old with severe autism, so I am no stranger to the disability community. I don’t have an extensive background in politics, but I have felt a need to get more actively involved in my community since 2016. I would bring a lot of enthusiasm to the Council, and I encourage all of our citizens to bring their ideas and concerns to the City Council.
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
How would you characterize the business climate in Little Canada and what is the role of businesses supporting quality of life issues in the community?
I believe that Little Canada generally has a thriving business community, but there are invariably more opportunities for growth in existing business and new small business. I think that most Little Canada businesses do play a part in our vibrant quality of life already, but we should certainly explore ways in which they can participate more robustly in the future.
What role do you think the City should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to, and retain existing businesses in, Little Canada?
The City should reach out to current businesses in order to explore expansion opportunities, and facilitate community changes to meet the ongoing needs of local residents
Do you support any other specific employment-related proposals in Little Canada (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in Little Canada and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
I have no definite strategic plans, at this juncture, these issues should be discussed with local businesses and residents to see what can and needs to be done to deal with the issues directly impacting the community.
What are your strategies to address public safety, housing, and transportation issues facing your community?
These are issues that I’m interested in exploring further, as we need to make sure that all of these services adequately reflect the diverse needs of our community.
What are your priorities for the City’s budget?
Maintaining fiscal responsibility is key, while still making the best use of the resources available, and potentially seeking out new resources for increasing the City’s budget.
What will you do to expand Little Canada’s tax base?
It’s important to try to get more businesses into the industrial parks. We also need to look at making our zoning laws more progressive in light of future housing needs, e.g., multi-unit senior housing, and multi-family housing.
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
I think that it’s important to reach out to the educational institutions to see what can be done to facilitate increased attendance and graduation rates. We also need to make sure that we are focusing resources on an increasingly diverse population and making sure that the needs of all students are met.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
I believe that this merits extensive exploration.
What is the role of the City Council in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses in Little Canada?
The City Council should absolutely work to attract minority and women-owned businesses that would complement the needs of our City and its growingly diverse population.
What further policies can Little Canada adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
I believe that the best approach here would be to encourage the business community to come together and determine a course of action that they feel would be helpful to all of their businesses at large, and then the Council will be able to address the genuine concerns of business owners and constructively determine how we can meet these requests.
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
