Candidate Bio
Through my extensive experience as a pastor and community leader, I have honed invaluable leadership skills that I am eager to leverage in my role on the City Council of Woodbury. By actively engaging in public service since my arrival in the city, my roles as a founding member of the Public Safety’s Multicultural Advisory Committee, dedicated service on the Parks and Natural Resources Commission (currently in second term), and appointments to the 834 School Board and the Washington County Community Corrections Advisory Board have equipped me with the ability to collaborate effectively, make informed decisions, and advocate for the diverse needs of our community.
I am honored to have received the 2020 Outstanding Volunteer Award, recognizing my dedication and commitment to serving our community. This award highlights my passion for making a difference in the lives of our city's residents through volunteer work. As a member of the city council, I will continue advocating for the needs of our community and fostering a spirit of volunteerism to create a positive impact for all.
These experiences have instilled in me a deep sense of responsibility, empathy, and determination to serve our city with integrity and dedication.
What style of leadership would you bring to this position?
We need strong, yet compassionate leadership to move our city forward and build a city were generations to come will be proud to call home. As our city grows and changes, we need visionary leaders that will elevate all of the voices in our community. Through proactive decision-making and community engagement, I am committed to fostering a thriving and sustainable environment for all residents of Woodbury.
What would be your top three priorities if elected? How might these priorities be affected by the state's projected economic outlook?
If elected, my top three priorities would be ensuring the highest quality drinking water, supporting public safety measures, and upholding fiscal responsibility. These priorities are crucial for the well-being and prosperity of our community.
By aligning our policy decisions with the positive economic outlook, we can build a resilient and sustainable community that thrives on safe, clean water, enhanced public safety, and sound fiscal stewardship. Our commitment to these priorities will lay the foundation for a prosperous and inclusive future for all residents of Minnesota.
With the projected surplus and sustained economic growth, we have the opportunity to invest in our community and implement transparent budgeting practices to ensure accountability and efficiency in resource allocation.
What do you consider the biggest challenge and conversely, the biggest opportunity in Woodbury?
The biggest challenge in Woodbury may be ensuring sustainable water treatment infrastructure to meet the growing demands of the community while maintaining water quality and conservation efforts. This requires ongoing investment in water treatment facilities, infrastructure upgrades, and environmental protection measures to safeguard this vital resource for current and future generations.
Conversely, the biggest opportunity in Woodbury lies in providing attainable housing options for residents, offering a diverse range of housing types, sizes, and affordability levels. This opportunity not only addresses the housing needs of the community but also promotes a more sustainable and resilient city for the future.
Please characterize your perspective on the ideal collaboration between government and the business community when it comes to tackling challenges whether they be education, housing, or workforce development. Do you feel the outcomes of the 2023-2024 legislative session positively or negatively impacted that collaboration and our state's business climate?
Collaboration between the city, other governmental agencies, and businesses is crucial to effectively support the residents of the City of Woodbury. By working together, we can leverage collective resources, expertise, and innovative solutions to address the diverse needs of our community and ensure a thriving, inclusive, and prosperous environment for all residents. Our collective efforts foster a strong foundation for sustainable growth, resilience, and well-being within our city.
How would you characterize the business climate in Woodbury and what role do you think the city should have in attracting and retaining jobs and new businesses in Woodbury?
A vital component for a thriving and progressive city is a business-friendly atmosphere. Businesses in Woodbury contribute essential goods and services that cater to every stage of our residents' lives. Therefore, it is imperative for the City Council to establish policies that foster businesses aligning with the evolving demands of our community. Collaboration among residents, business proprietors, and city departments is crucial to sustain Woodbury as a desirable hub for living and working.
What are your strategies to address public safety challenges in your community?
My strategies to address public safety challenges in our community are rooted in building relationships and fostering trust between the community and the police department. Over the past five years, as one of the founding members of Public Safety’s Multicultural Advisory Committee, I have dedicated myself to improving the relationship between law enforcement and residents from diverse backgrounds.
In addition, I am committed to ensuring that our public safety personnel are adequately trained, fully supported, and equipped with the necessary resources to effectively serve and protect our community.
What ideas do you have to address housing shortages and affordability?
To address housing shortages and affordability, it is beneficial to look regionally and learn from cities that are leading the effort in innovative housing solutions. By studying successful initiatives in neighboring cities, we can identify best practices and adapt proven strategies to our local context without reinventing the wheel.
How would you work to improve transportation options in your community, including improved safety for transit riders, pedestrian/bike, and drivers alike?
Transportation is not just about getting from point A to point B; it provides personal freedom, access, and connection for individuals within the community.
As a member of City Council, I will be committed to working with county and state authorities to invest in infrastructure improvements, such as dedicated bike lanes, pedestrian crossings, and traffic calming measures that will enhance safety for all road users. We must also implement a regional transportation strategic initiative to effectively address the escalating traffic challenges in Woodbury.
Cities have addressed many ongoing needs with temporary, federal COVID relief dollars, what are your plans to ensure fiscal stability as these federal, one-time funds run out?
As a city council member, I am committed to facilitating access to the resources made available by Washington County and the federal government in response to COVID-19. My priority is to ensure that our residents receive the necessary information to access these resources effectively. Additionally, I will dedicate myself to overseeing any funds within the city's control, ensuring they are allocated towards their designated purpose to best serve our community.
Uber/Lyft wages and proposed childcare subsidies funded by local property taxes are just a few areas where local units of government are wading into policy debates that may be best suited at the state. Please articulate the different scopes of work between state and local government (City/County). Are there specific areas of policy that the city should lead on in lieu of the state or county government?
The city government plays a vital role in delivering essential services to residents. This includes maintaining roads, overseeing public transportation, upholding public safety through police, fire and EMS services, handling waste disposal, offering recreational spaces and facilities, and providing utilities like water. When executed effectively, these services should operate so smoothly that they become ingrained in the daily lives of residents, almost going unnoticed.
The responsibility of the City Council is to uphold and enhance the overall quality of life for all residents. Collaborating with the county and state, the city must guarantee that these services are consistently and impeccably delivered.
