Candidate Bio
I have been a resident of Little Canada since 1996, with my wife and two sons. I spent many years coaching youth teams and as a member of related sports booster clubs. I have over 40 years of corporate IT experience, managing teams and financial budgets.
For the last nine years, I have been a member of the Little Canada Parks and Recreation Commission; chair for the last six years. Participated in City planning session and hiring interview for Parks/Rec director and city administrator.
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
Execution of Parks and Rec Master plan and Pioneer Park plan
City Capital Improvement plan, making sure we keep it current with input from citizens, city and businesses.
Community engagement and communication.
How would you characterize the business climate in Little Canada and what is the role of businesses supporting quality of life issues in the community?
I will be learning the current state of business in the city and believe it is important to ensure there is diversification and focus on providing a variety of employment opportunities.
What role do you think the city should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to, and retain existing businesses in, Little Canada?
We need to support current and attract new businesses by having easy and efficient processes to operate in our community.
What policies, if any, would you support to help employers address the labor shortage?
As new challenges are presented to the city, I would be open to reviewing any policy. We would need facts provided from all parties, council/mayor and staff on ways to update any policies that are hindering employeers.
Do you support any specific employment-related proposals in Little Canada (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in Little Canada and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
I would seek input from various city experts as well as conversations with impacted parties/businesses before providing any support to any proposals.
Public safety and rising crime rates are of serious concern to the business community and residents. What strategies or policies would you propose to address public safety issues facing your community?
I will promote community engagement and neighborhood groups to focus on prevention rather than reaction.
What strategies or policies would you propose to address housing issues facing your community?
Promote government grants and programs to allow long term residents to maintain their homes.
What strategies or policies would you propose to address transportation issues facing your community? Have your strategies or views changed on transportation since we’ve seen shifts in road use, public transportation use, work from home models, etc. due to the pandemic?
Working from home has impacted public transportation and number of users. We need to work with the metro transit to make sure public transportation is available to our citizens and businesses.
What are your priorities for the City’s budget?
Make sure we have the master plans current, allowing the staff to execute and find funding through programs and grants.
What will you do to expand Little Canada’s tax base?
We need to manage our growth to make sure it meets the needs of the city, citizens and business. This includes housing and business growth.
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
We need to engage the education institutions, city and businesses. As part of the Little Canada Park and Recreation commission, we are actively looking for a high school age position to participate in the commission.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
I do not believe in reducing services, we need to partner with our neighboring communities to serve and provide services and programs to our community.
What is the role of the City Council in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses in Little Canada?
-Ensure we have city laws and policies that are equitable.
-Help provide information on equitable lenders to assist in finance processes.
What further policies can Little Canada adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
We need to engage and listen to the business communities to understand their challenges and assess how we as the city can best assist.
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
I can commit to the community that I will be a fair and prepared council member. I will listen to all facts and input before making decisions that are best for the city/community/businesses to ensure Little Canada is a first class community for everyone.
