Candidate Bio
My name is Donald Mullin and I ask for your consideration for Mayor of White Bear Lake. I have been married for 22 years and have three children with my wife, the youngest is a senior this year. My Civic/Volunteer Experiences include the following: I am a current member of the WBLAS School Board, the Ramsey County Workforce Investment Board, and a Commissioner on the Saint Paul Port Authority. I have served on several other boards/committees at the county level.
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
My top priority would be economic development in order to hold the line on property taxes, continue to expand career pathways in high school while creating opportunities for local White Bear businesses to recruit, maintaining fiscal responsibility
How would you characterize the business climate in White Bear Lake and what is the role of businesses supporting quality of life issues in the community?
I think that the current business climate in White Bear Lake is strong and believe that I would be able to help grow new opportunities for our businesses in the community.
What role do you think the city should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to, and retain existing businesses in, White Bear Lake?
There are great opportunities to partner up with the local school district and create career pathways that show students success while being able to work locally.
Do you support any other specific employment-related proposals in White Bear Lake (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in St. Paul and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
I would need more specific information before I could make an informed statement.
What are your strategies to address public safety, housing, and transportation issues facing your community?
Continue to receive community input, ensuring everyone’s voice is heard and understanding that there are always growing pains with progress.
What are your priorities for the City’s budget?
To maintain fiscal responsibility
What will you do to expand White Bear Lake’s tax base?
I will continue to look for opportunities to grow within our existing footprint.
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
As a member of the school board for the last 8 years, career pathways will continue to be a top priority for me.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
This question requires specific information in order to provide informed ideas for change.
What is the role of the Mayor in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses in St. Paul?
The Mayor is the face of the City and should always be looking for ways to expand existing businesses and welcome new businesses to our community.
What further policies can White Bear Lake adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
