Candidate Bio
I have spent my career in retail, sales and management. I have run businesses that have multiple stakeholders that need to be considered before making drastic decisions. In that I learned not to make quick judgements but to learn the issues from all sides before making decisions. My wife has lived in Lauderdale for 20 years so, I have learned quickly what makes Lauderdale a great place to live and work.
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
Public safety
Housing costs
Maintaining Lauderdale’s quality of life
How would you characterize the business climate in Lauderdale and what is the role of businesses supporting quality of life issues in the community?
We have a diverse mix of businesses – retail, manufacturing, property rental and other service businesses. They are a part of the fabric of Lauderdale. Rental properties are important for the City as it can help a more diverse population live here.
What role do you think the city should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to, and retain existing businesses in, Lauderdale?
I would work with the Council to continue to encourage new businesses where possible and support existing businesses by trying to lower barriers to success.
What policies, if any, would you support to help employers address the labor shortage?
I would try to support employers by avoiding barriers to hiring.
Do you support any specific employment-related proposals in Lauderdale (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in Lauderdale and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
I would be hesitant to take steps that burden business without a clear understanding of how the intended outcome would be met and at what cost to the businesses.
Public safety and rising crime rates are of serious concern to the business community and residents. What strategies or policies would you propose to address public safety issues facing your community?
Supporting the police so they begin to feel empowered again to enforce existing laws. Police accountability would be the other side of that coin though.
What strategies or policies would you propose to address housing issues facing your community?
Looking at creative ideas to add housing while keeping a mix of different types of housing stock and prices. Lauderdale is a mature city so opportunities may be fewer but I am open to ideas.
What strategies or policies would you propose to address transportation issues facing your community? Have your strategies or views changed on transportation since we’ve seen shifts in road use, public transportation use, work from home models, etc. due to the pandemic?
This is an issue I would need to learn more on before making a concrete policy stand. There is much complexity in this and I am not sure we fully understand the long-term consequences or if these are permanent shifts.
What are your priorities for the City’s budget?
A budget that balances the needs of the city and the needs of the taxpayers.
What will you do to expand Lauderdale’s tax base?
Lauderdale is an older city so, there aren’t many development opportunities. Encouraging redevelopment while also keeping housing costs low may be an opportunity.
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
We are lucky to be in the Roseville School District and I will continue to do what I can to support those schools. My wife is a high school English teacher so I have an understanding of the education challenges students and educators face, especially Covid related.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
As a smaller city, Lauderdale has already embraced cooperation with other municipalities. I support this and will continue to look for more opportunities to share services.
What is the role of the City Council in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses in Lauderdale?
Doing our best to encourage a diversity of population will naturally encourage and increase.
What further policies can Lauderdale adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
I am open to doing whatever is practical to help those in need. I would like to learn more about their challenges and the impact on the long-term
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
