Candidate Bio
I have been a New Brighton resident for 51 years, a homeowner in New Brighton for 30 years. I have been an active member in community organizations including past President of the New Brighton Jaycees, active in youth programs including coaching youth sports, cub scout leader, Assistant Scout Master, Irondale Boys and Girls Booster Club. I was married in New Brighton and raised my kids in New Brighton.
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
Giving all residents a voice in City Council business and planning, not just a small fraction. Planning surveys should involve every residence, not jus those nearby affected areas.’
Holding property taxes at near zero increases so as not to make home ownership unaffordable.
Suspending current redevelopment planning until the plan better reflects the neighborhoods nearby.
How would you characterize the business climate in New Brighton and what is the role of businesses supporting quality of life issues in the community?
At the core of bringing a community together is building trust in its government. I want to create stronger bonds in our city to help deal with challenges we have been hearing that we all share. Working together, with good and open communication, we can have a greater impact on the success of our community.
What role do you think the city should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to, and retain existing businesses in, New Brighton?
New Brighton has a diverse set of industries and businesses within our 3 mile by 3 mile border. Many of our residents work in these businesses and use the services within our city. But we as a city can help to highlight these businesses to a much greater extent.
What policies, if any, would you support to help employers address the labor shortage?
New Brighton staff and leadership are members of the New Brighton Rotary and Chamber of Commerce, giving staff and leadership the ability to directly interact with business owners and their labor concerns.
Do you support any specific employment-related proposals in New Brighton (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in New Brighton and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
Businesses know best on how to run their policies autonomously, with no need for local government interference.
Public safety and rising crime rates are of serious concern to the business community and residents. What strategies or policies would you propose to address public safety issues facing your community?
Public safety is the number one priority of the government. It keeps our residents and children safe, and it maintains economic security. Continued police and fire department officer levels give residents and business owners both a mental sense of protection as well as a publicly visible security.
What strategies or policies would you propose to address housing issues facing your community?
New Brighton is a fully developed suburb. There has been in the past a greater emphasis on multi-family, multi-unit housing, there is a need for moderate priced single family homes (Starter homes).
What strategies or policies would you propose to address transportation issues facing your community? Have your strategies or views changed on transportation since we’ve seen shifts in road use, public transportation use, work from home models, etc. due to the pandemic?
New Brighton has sufficient roadways for commuters to access freeways or other highways. Transit routes will be added or reduced by Metro Transit as ridership demand changes.
What are your priorities for the City’s budget?
Public Safety is a core service and the number one priority of the government. I believe NO BUDGET CUTS for Police and Fire personnel. Crime prevention programs are a priority.
What will you do to expand New Brighton’ tax base?
Work to have the local business as sector pay more taxes than the burden of the taxes being paid by our homeowners today.
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
School Districts operate independently of the city government.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
City government should concentrate on core services. Just as an example a city should not purchase art or pay for artists to create art. Cities can concentrate on making services such as farmers markets, and free concerts in the parks, and city festivals, even though those would be a separate private function and not directly funded with tax dollars. The city should encourage civic organizations to sponsor and fund activities and beautification enhancements.
What is the role of the mayor in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses in New Brighton?
City ordinances and codes should be beneficial and equal opportunity for all entrepreneurs and business owners. Equity based policies disenfranchise certain businesses while artificially benefiting another.
What further policies can New Brighton adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
Allowing businesses the freedom to operate without random non-fact based restrictions will allow businesses to continue to do business and the ability to hire additional employees at market rate wages.
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
