Candidate Bio
I am a Twin Cities born and raised Minnesotan!
Grew up in Roseville, went to college at Hamline University and moved to Mounds View in 2003. I am proud to call Mounds View my home and it is where I choose to stay and raise my family. I care about my neighbors and my community. Over the years I have heard from many neighbors about the poor communication and lack of transparency leading to mistrust in the city. I want to take the time to clearly listen to what is being proposed, take time to talk with people in the community before hastily passing something that many people in city due to lack of clarity or transparency, have very little knowledge of/or how it affects their neighborhood. When good communication, compassionate discussion and time is allowed to actually listen to what neighbors have to say.
That will build a strong, confident and caring community.
What style of leadership would you bring to this position?
Open Communication, Compassion for my neighbors & Common Sense!
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
Gain the trust of people in the city through clear communication, that its elected officials are truly there to represent them.
Let fellow neighbors in the community clearly understand what is actually being proposed and voted on by the city council with clear and accurate description. Not assigning resolution #’s with nondescript wording that no one can track or understand what is potentially being discussed.
No more housing needs to be forced into our city. There is other ways to bring money into the city other then just adding as many people as needed to qualify for certain government advantages. Our schools and teachers are our strongest asset, they are maxed and have closed open enrollment for many years now.
What do you consider the biggest challenge and conversely, the biggest opportunity in Mounds View?
The biggest challenge in Mounds View is clear communication and we have gotten away from a common sense approach to this.
The biggest opportunity is learning together as a community that there are alternative ways to bring people together with the understanding of how we can help our city strive.
How would you characterize the business climate in Mounds View and what role do you think the city should have in attracting and retaining jobs and new businesses in Mounds View?
This is where I really believe with collective ideas Mounds View can really improve. Too many opportunities in this city are sitting vacant and have been for too long. The city needs to communicate with property owners so that we can get vacant spots filled and pump some life back into our city. Niche shops and restaurants which will make people happy about spending their money in Mounds View. Support the business we already have as much as we can.
What are your strategies to address public safety challenges in your community?
Support our excellent police force as much as possible!!
We have a dedicated police force in our small city, they are here to protect and serve our community. They do a wonderful job!
What ideas do you have to address housing shortages and affordability?
No New Housing, much less affordable housing. Mounds View already has a high percentage of affordable housing and rental properties. Work with landlords and property owners to improve what we already have available.
How would you work to improve transportation options in your community, including improved safety for transit riders, pedestrian/bike, and drivers alike?
We have many sidewalks and bike lanes that rarely get used. Keep improving upon what we already have in place as the city has been doing. Try not to force things in where they are not needed.
What will you do to expand Mounds View’s tax base?
There are other ways!!
We need to work on this in other ways than trying to jam as many houses/apartments as we can into any available land you can find.
We need to help specialty and niche shops find a home in Mounds View.
We need to encourage a specialty restaurant or establishment to call Mounds View its home. These niche business will drive traffic and get people happy about staying in, or coming to visit Mounds View and spend their time and money.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
Stop trying so hard to push the city administration agenda and start listening to what the people that elected you are asking for. There is always a better way than with force and confusion. New opportunities find a way to come together when you have a strong and trusting relationship within the community.
