Candidate Bio
I have had the privilege of being the State Representative for 57B for the last election cycle. During my tenor I have done a lot to work across the aisle to get things done for my district. As a member of Education Policy, Property and Local tax, Education Finance and State government I have sponsors 86 bills and cosponsored over 350. I feel my working-class background as EMT as well as my involvement in the community as football coach along with my business background in real estate has given me a broad base to represent the people of my district.
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
The Corona virus pandemic has proven to be a moving target and is a threat to our health care, education, and economic systems My top priorities would be health care, education, and economic recovery.
How would you characterize the business climate in the East Metro and what role do businesses play in supporting quality of life issues in East Metro communities?
Minnesota, as well as the East Metro business climate significantly changed since the Corona virus pandemic and it has caused wide revenue variances that need to be reviewed with caution since we are in unfamiliar territory. However, the State of Minnesota has multiple resources to keep legislators up to date on the business climate. Businesses contribute to quality of life in multiple ways by creating opportunities, innovations, revenue, and providing stability and security to individuals.
What role do you think the State should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to and retain existing businesses in the East Metro?
The State should play an active role in creating an environment that will improve the Quality of Life of its people and part of that role is creating a culture that assist the business community. I will commit to work with businesses of all sizes by assisting to allocating resources to improve the quality of life of the people of my district.
Do you support any specific employment-related proposals (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in the east metro and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
I support reasonable regulations that encourage fair competition, ensure safety, environmental standards. Specific regulations such as minimum wage, sick time and mandatory scheduling need to be reviewed by the legislative process which requires research, discussion, and input from the community.
What is your strategy to address public safety, transportation, and housing issues?
Public Safety: The main role of government is to provide public safety to the citizens. This can be accomplished by supporting our public safety workers and giving them the necessary resources to enforce laws without targeting communities or violating due process. Transportation- More funding needs to be done to give state/local government and input from community stakeholders, more flexibility to use funds to build clean, safer, and more accessible transportation systems. Housing – Support proposal aimed to protect 30-year mortgage and support affordable housing.
What are your priorities for the State’s budget? Are there any services currently provided by the State that you believe should be expanded, cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
I support a budget that focuses on community prosperity and assisting to keep our citizen’s safe and protected from the devastating affects Corona Virus pandemic. This will create and environment for several new opportunities within the business health care and education communities.
What will you do to expand your district’s tax base?
We need policies that assist us in expanding the current economic activity.
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
Support our parents and teachers to provide a safe, affordable education within the current and ever-changing environment.
What is the role of the State in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses?
We need to continue to provide support such as the recent paycheck protection program loan forgiveness from the SBA to help businesses keep their workforce and business afloat
What further policies can the State of Minnesota adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
First, we need to keep our citizen safe, and help detect and slow the spread of the virus by supporting business owners with the necessary funding to keep workplaces safe. Secondly, we need to work with business leaders to assist with grants, low interest loans and delaying taxes especially within the small business sector.
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
I am proud DFL endorsed candidate that can work across the aisle because I believe we all need to work together in unity just as our parent’s did during WWII to overcome this enemy.
