Candidate Bio
I was born in 1954 in Minnesota, I actually lived in Columbia Heights as a baby, now here again. Attended Cambridge HS. My father was disabled from the time I was born, my parents tried to live the best they could with just a small Army disability pension and a small Social Security check. I am a CNC machinist-Lead, self-taught by reading a machine manual one time. I started U. of M., but decided I wanted to be a machinist instead of a math teacher. I am a chess player, 10 years President of the Mn. Kingsmen Chess Association, I was a USCF certified tournament director. President Reagan wrote a letter to me stating playing chess was an educational activity, as well as Governor Quie. I managed to obtain 501(C)(3) status for the MKCA
I married my wife, Lucia Vogel, in Honduras in 1985. She is running for Senate 41. I have two sons that have served in the US Army. As a child I was told I had a little Oneida blood from my ancestors, I also have Cherokee and black relatives. I have many Hispanic relatives from my wife's family.
I have thought about running for office before, last year the CD5 Chairman suggested I run, this year a Senator and House member asked me to run. After my wife decided to run for Senate 41, I decided I would run for House 41B.
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
How would you characterize the business climate in the East Metro and what role do businesses play in supporting quality of life issues in East Metro communities?
What role do you think the State should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to and retain existing businesses in the East Metro?
Do you support any specific employment-related proposals (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in the east metro and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
What is your strategy to address public safety, transportation, and housing issues?
What are your priorities for the State’s budget? Are there any services currently provided by the State that you believe should be expanded, cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
What will you do to expand your district’s tax base?
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
What is the role of the State in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses?
What further policies can the State of Minnesota adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
