What would be your top three priorities if elected?
How would you characterize the business climate in Scandia and what is the role of businesses supporting quality of life issues in the community?
In general, our business community is struggling. As President of the EDA, I am working with the City and County to find ways to help all our businesses… from meetings to listen to our business owners, to offering low interest loans, to providing free and confidential business consulting services. I will also continue efforts to ensure the city does not overburden any business with unnecessary regulations.
What role do you think the City should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to, and retain existing businesses in, Scandia?
Scandia needs to make affordable housing opportunities available to attract the needed workforce and customer base our businesses need. I am working to ensure every business in Scandia has access to the five basic things they need: internet, sewer, water, customers, and a workforce.
Do you support any other specific employment-related proposals in Scandia (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in Scandia and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
I believe the City needs to support our businesses and should not place any undue regulations on our business community.
What are your strategies to address public safety, housing, and transportation issues facing your community?
I continue to support our Police, Fire and EMT’s. I am working to create affordable housing opportunities to attract and retain families. We already have a metro-ride share service in town and will support expansion as needed. The biggest issue with transportation is finding a way to maintain our roads in good condition without costly tax increases. A secondary issue is working with County and State agencies to establish safe speed limits on their highways that pass by our homes and schools.
What are your priorities for the City’s budget?
Expansion of internet, business support, infrastructure repair and maintenance, and support for affordable housing opportunities.
What will you do to expand Scandia's tax base?
Expand our business park, establish affordable housing opportunities, leverage our historic and rural character to increase tourism.
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
My wife and I raised 2 children in Scandia. I know the school system is doing a great job educating our children. Our businesses employ our local children. They teach our kids skills and a good work ethic. I have, and will continue to, seek ways to attract young families to support our elementary school and our business community.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
Scandia already shares Police, Fire, and EMT services with surrounding communities. I support continuation of this practice.
What is the role of the City Council in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses in Scandia?
Scandia needs to foster increased growth in all businesses.
What further policies can Scandia adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
Scandia needs to continue working with Washington County to acquire and share federal and state relief dollars to the needs of our residents and our business community.
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
Most of you know me to be a caring, transparent, ethical communicator, and servant of the people. Working on the City Council means establishing respect and finding balance. It means being a team player. It means working together with the City Staff, our Mayor, the other Council members, our Commissions, our Committees, our businesses, and our residents. My lifelong commitment to community service, and helping others, has taught me the skills needed to serve you well. I hope I have earned enough of your respect for you to re-elect me to a second term.
