Candidate Bio
A. This would be my first time serving in a public service position, but I am passionate for making a difference. I want to be a voice in the council advocating for positive change. My goal is to add the health perspective to future plans. I am currently in a Masters program for nursing at Simmons University. At my university I am a member of the Student Advisory Council and I am also part of Sigma Theta Tau. I graduated nursing school from Century College in 2014. I have also gone to school for Veterinary Technology at Argosy University in 2009. I love to learn. A project for my masters program was to work with public health officials in Oakdale and Washington County on Lyme disease in our area. I was able to disseminate the project at the Vet Tech convention in February 2020. I enjoy connecting with people
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
A. Adding the perspective of health into our every day lives.
B. Being part of solutions.
C. Ensuring equity across all projects.
How would you characterize the business climate in Oakdale and what is the role of businesses supporting quality of life issues in the community?
A. As a consumer I find the business climate in Oakdale slow. There are some great businesses located in Oakdale, but they are not widely talked about.
B. I love the idea of asking how does business impact our quality of life? I like this question because it ties in nursing and health care. For example; last summer I was conducting a project on Lyme disease for Washington County. I thought it would behove the cities and county to include vet clinics in educating the public about ticks. We all know how Lyme disease effects our pets, but what if the health department was able to provide the tick ID cards to clinics. I also thought about construction workers. I suggested that when the city contracts with a company to request there is extra training regarding Lyme disease. These are some of the ideas I presented to the city of Oakdale and the Washington County health department. By supporting our businesses we can improve quality of life of the city
What role do you think the City should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to, and retain existing businesses in, Oakdale ?
A. One way to retain existing business in Oakdale is to have community support. Having city events where it involves the community is always great way for business to advertise themselves.
Do you support any other specific employment-related proposals in Oakdale (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in Oakdale and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
A. The best way to understand the impact of your choices is listening to others. By listening you can then try to empathize and see what could change to ensure that the proposal is the best fit for the community.
B. You also need to look at statistics to see if the changes make number sense. There needs to be an evaluation of the quality improvement by the numbers. Something to give factional evidence as to whether or not the processed worked
What are your strategies to address public safety, housing, and transportation issues facing your community?
A. I can answer these questions by asking; how does this strategy effect public health. All of these issues effect the way we live and become prosperous
What are your priorities for the City’s budget?
A. I believe in finding a balance between investing in people, securing our future, and finding the most economical way of accomplishing goals.
What will you do to expand Oakdale’s tax base?
A. I know Oakdale is working hard to secure an expanding tax base by adding housing and businesses, which I am supportive of these measures.
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
A. Acknowledging the teachers hard work and listening to the work they are doing in the classroom. Also being a participant at educational meetings to hear of changes.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
A. I am currently not familiar with all the services provided by the city, but I am actively studying those policies. I am interested in meeting with others to find services that have worked.
What is the role of the City Council in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses in Oakdale ?
A. The role of the city council in fostering growth is to talk to people to let them know what is available as resources.
What further policies can Oakdale adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
A. The local business pandemic relief package is a good start in assisting our community. As time progresses this recovery program will need to be revisited and potentially revised to fit the needs of our current business owners.
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
A. Since this is my first time running for office, I’d like citizens to know that I am hard working, intelligent, and I can empathize with others. As a nurse I am acutely aware that how important decisions are. I want to join the city council to be another perspective for citizens in the community. Having a diverse council will ensure the strength of the city. I want to be apart of positive change.
