Candidate Bio
Lived in Vadnais Heights since 1996. Was with the Ramsey County Sheriff’s Department, then with Vadnais Heights Fire Department.
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
Work with Public Safety for our area
Promote Vadnais Heights Lions Food Shelf
Promote new Mental Health Suicide & Crisis Line “988”
How would you characterize the business climate in Vadnais Heights and what is the role of businesses supporting quality of life issues in the community?
Companies should be a part of a good business climate and keep working on it.
What role do you think the city should have in attracting and retaining jobs, and what steps would you take to solicit new businesses to, and retain existing businesses in, Vadnais Heights?
Keeping it easy for companies to prosper.
What policies, if any, would you support to help employers address the labor shortage?
Endorse Job Fairs. Show prospective employees what the job entails.
Do you support any specific employment-related proposals in Vadnais Heights (such as minimum wage, sick time, or mandatory scheduling notice)? If so, what steps would you take to understand the impact of an ordinance on the many types of businesses in Vadnais Heights and how would you define any exceptions to those policies?
I refuse to tell a company HOW they must run their business. You can always offer them suggestions. Minimum wage is hard because then the company must increase prices to stay in business, which then sometimes makes it impossible for them to STAY in business. Sick Time is also hard to work out, especially with us currently dealing with COVID-19 and soon possibly dealing with Monkeypox. Again, scheduling is up to the company, but they should always try to work with the employees. Especially those looking for more hours.
Public safety and rising crime rates are of serious concern to the business community and residents. What strategies or policies would you propose to address public safety issues facing your community?
We have a great Sheriff’s department in our community. We need to work on changing our laws on the repeat offenders. Hard to do anything when the offenders are released the next day, just for the offender to do another crime.
What strategies or policies would you propose to address housing issues facing your community?
It is my understanding that Vadnais Heights has great resources for housing issues. Just go to: Housing Resources under www.cityvadnaisheights.com
What strategies or policies would you propose to address transportation issues facing your community? Have your strategies or views changed on transportation since we’ve seen shifts in road use, public transportation use, work from home models, etc. due to the pandemic?
I’m opposed to the Light Rail Line. When I’ve used it (Metro Area) I see a lot of harassment as well as smoking on the trains. Have rarely seen Law Enforcement or anybody checking for tickets. It is just as bad as the HOV lanes. No Enforcement. People are always crossing the double white lines also.
What are your priorities for the City’s budget?
From what I’ve seen, they do a great job on the budget.
What will you do to expand Vadnais Heights’ tax base?
I will need to learn more on this subject.
How will you work with K-12 and post-secondary educational institutions and businesses to ensure our region develops and retains an educated workforce?
The White Bear Lake School District has always had great teachers and staff. Both of my kids attended. Any questions the wife and I had were usually answered next business day. I can’t speak for now, but the kids in the area seem to enjoy going there.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities?
Again, something that I would have to learn.
What is the role of the City Council in fostering increased minority- and women-owned businesses in Vadnais Heights?
I can only hope that our City encourages these businesses.
What further policies can Vadnais Heights adopt to help the business community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic?
I’m thinking that they are doing fine with their response. As I mentioned above, I hope they still will continue doing fine if the Monkeypox follows.
Is there anything else you would like to share with voters not covered above?
Not at this time.
