Candidate Bio
Ten years ago, my wife Ceili & I decided to make Mounds View our home. We have two children, ages 6 & 4. I have a financial services career which has helped me prepare & understand budgets and develop strong negotiation skills. I have held leadership positions & served on the executive boards of several non-profits and enjoy serving in various ways to help people. In my role as a current City Council member, I am the leader who values the voices of our residents and seeks common-sense solutions to issues facing our community. I have attended (and will continue to attend) League of Minnesota Cities Leadership Training and serve as the Council liaison to Festival in the Park & Ramsey County League of Local Governments
What style of leadership would you bring to this position?
I am non-partisan & believe in a collaborative style of leadership in the true style of representative government, where everyone’s’ voice matters & should be heard. I ask hard questions & research issues for the best understanding of how a decision might positively or negatively impact our community. Voting against the status quo or compromising takes skills & courage which I take quite seriously. I believe in an open-door policy and enjoy working with our residents to find common ground. I believe an elected official should respond timely to calls, texts & emails, and I also hold a weekly discussion group to make sure I am serving in the best interest of the people.
What would be your top three priorities if elected?
*Continue transparent communication & engagement with our residents
*Ensure we are addressing citizen concerns & issues facing our community in a timely matter
*Seek ways to reduce expenses while continuing to provide essential & quality of life services to our residents & businesses
What do you consider the biggest challenge and conversely, the biggest opportunity in Mounds View?
The people who live, work & play here make Mounds View a great community. I think the biggest challenge we face is getting information to a place where people can view & interact with it. Our website could be improved. Our opportunity is to restore a welcoming & respectful climate here and have a mayor who can lead us through controversial times. I believe citizen input, rather than what appears to be staff goals, should be the driver for improvements & changes needed in Mounds View.
How would you characterize the business climate in Mounds View and what role do you think the city should have in attracting and retaining jobs and new businesses in Mounds View?
Mounds View is a well-built-out community. We are 98% built. We are consistently looking for opportunities. I see the council as a partner in terms of helping businesses succeed. As an example, I headed an initiative to relax our sign ordinance, to get a business the appropriate square footage they need for their signs.
What are your strategies to address public safety challenges in your community?
I appreciate & support all our first responders. Mounds View has a joint powers agreement for our volunteer SBM Fire Department with the cities of Spring Lake Park & Blaine that is one of the best working models in the Nation. We have our own Police Department of dedicated men, women & K9s lead by Chief Ben Zender. We provide mutual aid to our surrounding communities & are supported with mutual aid as needed by Ramsey County Sheriff’s Office. We have an Alina Ambulance hub in our city. Mounds View is a very safe place to live, speeding vehicles is our largest crime complaint here. We continue to work on retention & good partnership between departments. I personally would like to see more law enforcement support with the County Attorney’s Office charging more of the arrests that are made in Ramsey County.
What ideas do you have to address housing shortages and affordability?
Mounds View has naturally occurring affordability with our apartments, townhomes, manufactured home parks, and various ages & styles of housing stock. We have one of the lowest median home values in the area, and apartment vacancies under $1,500 a month. Despite being mostly built out, there is a pending infill development that could bring 10-12 new single-family homes here. It’s very disappointing to me that each time we meet the Met Council housing goals, they raise them.
How would you work to improve transportation options in your community, including improved safety for transit riders, pedestrian/bike, and drivers alike?
Mounds View has several new bike paths and sidewalks. Metro transit recently re-routed to better serve the community. I would continue the work on the street projects and work with neighborhoods about sensible pedestrian options.
What will you do to expand Mounds View’s tax base?
I will continue to support neighborhood sensitive development/redevelopment. I believe quality of life is as important as expanding the tax base and with our citizens involved, we can figure out good common-sense solutions.
Are there any services currently provided by the city that you believe should be cut back or eliminated? Are there new opportunities to share services with other entities.
We Recently conducted a community survey, and a great majority of people are happy with the service/value they are getting. I don't really see the need to change much in this space, we do a good job of providing value at a reasonable expense.
